Dear Kosterina Family,
In recent years, agrotourism has emerged as a popular choice for the health-aspirational crowd. It has also quickly become one of our favorite hobbies following our harvest trip to Crete, Greece in November of last fall. At AgrecoFarms in Crete we harvest olives, crushed grapes for wine, baked fresh bread, tasted fresh honey, picked tangerines and enjoyed a farm-to-table lunch overlooking the most beautiful Mediterranean landscape.
This growing trend combines the allure of travel with the benefits of engaging in agricultural activities, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. For the health-minded, agrotourism gives us the opportunity to connect with nature, inspire wellness, and indulge in farm-to-table experiences. And it’s big business -- the industry is expected to grow from $58B to over $100B in the next 5 years.
So, what is Agrotourism?
Agrotourism is where adventure meets agriculture in the most delightful ways. It's a journey into the heart of rural lifestyles and farm-fresh fun. It's all about harvesting crops, savoring fresh produce, discovering sustainable
farming practices, and soaking up the vibrant local culture along the way.
What are the Health Benefits of Agrotourism?
Well, firstly there is often some physical activity involved like walking or hiking. Secondly, you’ll be enjoying fresh, nutrient-rich whole foods and you’ll be in nature which is a natural stress-reducer. And it’s educational and often, really inspiring! A great alternative choice to drinking margaritas by the pool.
There are tons of activity options but here are a few to whet your appetite:
- Farm Workshops in Greece: Experiences like organic gardening, sustainable farming methods, or cooking classes using farm-fresh ingredients.
- Nature Walks and Hikes: Think scenic landscapes, guided nature walks, fresh air and exercise.
- Farm-to-Table Dining: Delicious meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients, often served in picturesque farm settings.
- Wellness Activities: Some agrotourism farms offer spa treatments, wellness retreats, yoga and meditation and holistic healing practices like herbal medicine workshops or aromatherapy sessions.
